Tutoring Information

If you live in the Raleigh, NC (Cary) area, please contact me if you are interested in private math tutoring and/or small group classes at my home in Cary.  My priority and emphasis is on students who are struggling to pass their EOG exam, and on students who are struggling with the math required to earn a high school diploma.  I can also work with adults who are studying for their GED or similar exam, or with students who are studying for their SAT, GMAT, GRE, or similar exam, or with parents who want to learn math so that they can better help their children.

Please be sure to read my tutoring policy document which should answer many of the questions that you might have about my services.

I sometimes get requests for online tutoring.  My advice is to just utilize my free question-answering service.  As long as I see that you are making an effort to learn, and are not just submitting your homework to me, I can continue to answer your questions by e-mail for free.

Of course you can also seek out a tutor in your local area, which is the best way to learn, and is preferable to online help.  See if you can find a high school or college student who is willing to do it for a reasonable fee, but make sure that they know the material and know how to explain it in a way that makes sense to you.  You could try posting your need for tutoring on your local branch of Craigslist, and also see what tutoring ads are posted there.  Of course proceed with caution.  Craigslist in no way verifies the authenticity of the ads that are posted on their site.

I am not in favor of expensive, commercial tutoring schools and agencies that offer all sorts of attractive "guarantees," along with lots of fine print.  No one can guarantee anything since it all depends on how much time and effort you are willing to put in on your own.  It is no different than learning a sport or a musical instrument.  The teacher can't do it for you.

If you do decide to utilize a commercial online tutoring service, make sure you use one that uses interactive live whiteboards, and some type of chat function, whether IM or microphone (ideally the latter).  This way you can listen to the tutor, and watch as s/he writes things down.  Online tutoring should be a last resort.  Private, in-person tutoring is best so that your tutor can watch how you are working.  Note that I do not have interactive live whiteboard capabilities, which is why I suggest either using my free e-mail question-answering service, or seeking out a local in-person tutor.

Don't pay any money to someone who is just humoring you, and/or doing your homework for you, and don't waste your time with them.  You will never learn that way.  Tutoring is a way of getting help, but you still have to work hard and put in lots of thought and effort.

Parents should check with their child's school to see what free tutoring services are offered by their state as part of the No Child Left Behind Act.  Do not stop until you get a clear and acceptable answer on this matter.

I will provide additional information and details about my tutoring services to those who contact me, or you can read my tutoring policy document for more information.
