A Message About Using the TI-83 Plus Graphing Calculator

The Texas Instruments TI-83 Plus graphing calculator has become somewhat of the standard in the school system.  Many high schools allow this calculator to be used on every exam, including state exit exams.  It is very important that you first determine whether or not this calculator is permitted, and if so, on what exams.  It's possible that for some exams, it may be used on some parts, but not on others.

It is also important to know if this is the only model of calculator that is allowed, or if you are allowed to use a more advanced model.  It is likely that a more advanced model is not allowed.  This is because more advanced models may provide too much of an advantage on the exam, or may allow you to store formulas or information that could be construed as cheating.  Find out exactly what calculators are allowed.  In any case, it is probably the case that you do not need a more advanced calculator than the TI-83 Plus.  The additional memory and features are only appropriate for someone who is pursuing much more advanced math than what is taught in high school.

If this calculator is allowed in your school, make sure that you fully understand how to use it.  Your teacher will likely not be allowed to help you use it on an exam.  Make sure that it has fresh batteries before an important test.  It is likely that your school will have very limited time to teach you how to use it, if any time at all.  You may need to learn how to use it on your own.  You are welcome to ask me questions if you need help with using it.

If you would like to buy the calculator, Amazon.com has it for a good price, and free shipping.  I believe that they only charge tax if shipped to Washington state.  If you click on the "browse graphing calculators" link on the left, it will be the first item that comes up.  Note that if you are unable to afford the calculator, you should check with your school to see if calculators will be available for use on exams, and/or to borrow for a period of time.
