Lesson 80: Dividing Fractions
In this easy lesson, we'll learn how to divide fractions.
First, review all of the previous lessons on fractions, and make sure that you fully understand them. To divide fractions, we all we do is change the second fraction into its reciprocal, and then we multiply the fractions. The answer will be our result.
For example, let's divide 2/7 ÷ 3/5. We'll convert the second fraction to its reciprocal, and then change the division sign to a multiplication sign. Now we have 2/7 x 5/3. Multiply as you've learned, to get 10/21. That is our answer. It may seem odd, but to divide, we end up multiplying.
Symbolically, we can say that a/b ÷ c/d = (a/b) x (d/c).
In words, to divide by a fraction, multiply by the fraction's
reciprocal.
