Lesson 21: Place Value to 100,000
This is an easy lesson, since you already know place value to 100. This lesson is just an extension of the concept to 100,000.
Don't forget to watch the embedded video clip for this lesson at the bottom of the page. Please be sure to read the embedded video information and disclaimer.
When looking at a number, you know that the rightmost digit is in the ones place, the digit to the left of that is in the tens place, and the digit to the left of that is in the hundreds place. Each place is 10 times the value of the place to the right. Extending this, we can make the following chart:
| Hundred Thousands | Ten Thousands | Thousands | Hundreds | Tens | Ones |
| 100,000 | 10,000 | 1,000 | 100 | 10 | 1 |
Using this chart, we can see that the number 123,456 would be read as one hundred twenty-three thousand, four hundred fifty-six, and would formed by adding 100,000 + 20,000 + 3,000 + 400 + 50 + 6.
Notice that we always put a comma in between the thousands and hundreds column. This is simply done to make large numbers easier to read.
